NDM News Story 29: Sun website traffic rises by a quarter – but it is eclipsed by the Mirror

The Sun reported a 25.6% rise in daily unique browsers to 1.6 million in November

The Sun, after scrapping their initial paywall for their online news, has seen a significant increase in the number of daily browsers. However, despite this great increase, the Mirror still has a larger audience in comparison to the Sun. The site's editorial director, stated that the Mirror's rolling news on the Paris attacks had helped them bring in a new record of audience members.
  • By the end of November, there was a 25.6% rise in daily unique browsers to 1.6 million.
  • Trinity’s national newspaper sites, enjoyed a 28.1% rise in average daily unique browsers to 4.7 million last month
  • Paris terror attacks had helped it bring in a record 77.99m unique browsers over the whole month.
  • The Independent was up 24.4% compared with October to 3.27 million daily unique browsers, Telegraph.co.uk jumped 17.2% to just over 5 million, theguardian.com rose 13.7% to 9.27 million and MailOnline added 10.5% to 14.6 million.
  • The Evening Standard posted the biggest rise of 29.2% to almost 520,000 daily unique browsers.
The Sun has potential of slowly gaining back their audiences as it still hasn't been long since they abolished their paywall. With more people slowly started to find out about the Sun's online site, they will possibly see a constant increase in their audience. However , there is a still a possibility that the Sun may not catch up with the Mirror's numbers as it can be considered that many of the Sun's original audience may have changed over to the Mirror.
